Gdańsk’s cuisine is very special. It has always been a place of mixing different culinary influences. For example, you can find here many exceptional alcohols, like Machandel.
Machandel is juniper vodka and it has its own drinking ritual.
To empty glass you should put plum stuffed with a toothpick and pour Machandel over it. With your left hand, remove the plum with a toothpick and put it in the mouth. Eat the plum, then putting the stone under the cheek and holding a toothpick in your left hand drink vodka. Spit out the stone into an empty glass, break the toothpick and put in a glass, what is connected with Hanseatic saying for luck ‘breaking the masts’.
